9,784: That’s the number of people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco during the latest Point-In-Time Count, representing a 30% increase from 2017. Family homelessness is unfortunately on the rise, too. This year, 201 homeless families were identified—up 6% from 2017. This number is likely much higher, as families “doubled up” in the homes of family/friends or staying in motels—an often unseen form of homelessness—are not included in the count.
While this change is discouraging, it means that Raphael House’s commitment to helping families escape homelessness permanently is needed now more than ever before.
We will continue to partner with families in our Residential Shelter and post-shelter Bridge Programs to break down barriers so they achieve and maintain stable housing and financial stability.
Last month, Raphael House helped six families get into stable housing. We served 51 families in our Residential Shelter Program this past fiscal year, and helped 156 families maintain housing and financial stability with post-shelter services through our Bridge Program. These successes are a result of our unique, trauma-informed supportive services: intensive case management, wellness and career development support, academic tutoring, children’s programming, and more.
As a 100% community-supported organization, we can only offer these supportive services to families through your generous support. We thank you for all your contributions!
We hope you’ll join us in alleviating family homelessness in the Bay Area as we approach a new fiscal year. We invite you to take a tour of our Residential Shelter, volunteer individually or with your company, or to make a donation to help us expand our services to more parents and children in our communities. Through your contributions, we can help end the generational cycle of homelessness together.
